What to Expect at CSSD

The Charter School of San Diego operates very differently from most traditional public schools. Read below to learn what to expect from your experience at CSSD, or check out our Academic Program page to learn more about our program details and philosophy.

CSSD’s Teachers Are On Demand

Our teachers are immediately available to assist you in our Resource Centers. In fact, their response time is so quick that our students say it is like they are “on demand.” Our teachers all hold current California teaching credentials and are specially trained to meet your academic needs. Whether you need the focus to catch up, freedom to accelerate, or support to finish, CSSD teachers will help you reach your goals.

CSSD Has A Plan

CSSD’s “On-Demand” teachers work with you and your family from day one to create a unique educational experience. You will be treated as an individual and will be assigned courses based on your academic and career plans. University of California A-G approved courses are offered across the curriculum to all students. In addition, a variety of pathways that frequently align better with student needs are available. For more information on how we can personalize your education, explore our Pathways Program.

Personalized Education Plan

The first step you take as a student at CSSD is to participate in a credit audit. Your counselor will look at the academic credits you have coming into our school and compare them to the requirements of your goal credits, no matter what path you decide. For example, if you choose to attend a four-year university, your counselor will compare your existing credits to the graduation requirements as well as university entrance requirements, and help you build a schedule for courses that will enable you to meet your goals for graduation and university. Your counselor will talk to you about your goals, learning style, test scores, and current interests to help you build a schedule that’s right for you. This schedule of courses and strategy for success is called a Pathways Personalized Education Plan (PPEP).

Courses

After you have set up your PPEP with a counselor, you work one-on-one with your teacher to succeed in your studies. Your teacher will talk with you and your parents about your progress and development in your academic studies to make sure that your PPEP is updated and accurate to match any changing goals, career interests, or academic achievements. A teacher may offer any course to you at any time, and courses take 3-4 weeks to complete. Our students study one or two courses at a time.

Resource Center Environment

When you are in the Resource Center, you can expect one-on-one help from your teacher to answer questions about your studies or introduce new material. Any student can take any course, and our Resource Centers are designed for quiet, focused study. Your teacher is always available by email for the days you aren’t in the Resource Center. Teachers provide field trips and tutoring sessions allowing you to experience unique and personalized learning opportunities.
